Dahlias - Seeds, Cuttings or Tubers?

So you want to grow Dahlias? Of course your do! They are stunning.

First off, let me tell you the life cycle of a Dahlia.

Started from seed, these little Dahlias grow. After a season in the ground, they develop tubers instead of classic roots. These tubers don’t enjoy the cold, in our zone they get dug up and brought into a cool dark place for the winter. In the spring, you can divide the tuber into multiple smaller tubers.

Here are your options. Seeds, cuttings, or tubers.

Seeds are by far your most cost effective option, and they are quite readily available. When planting seeds, you wont know what kind of flower you will end up with. If you are open to the idea of surprise, this is such a fun option. Its also a great option if you are looking to find some new varieties that you love. Start a bunch of seeds, tag your favorite flowers, and dig up those tubers at the end of the season. Divide the tuber in the spring, and multiply your favourite flowers.

Another option is to “wake up” your tubers late in the winter/early spring. Do so by placing your tuber in potting soil, and bring into a warm environment with lots of natural light. Do NOT water until green growth is seen. Once leaves develop, you can cut out this new growth, being sure to include some of the crown. Place cuttings in soil, and viola! You will have an exact clone of the tuber you cut from.

Lastly, grow from tubers. Either divide your own, or purchase. Tubers are wonderful as you will know exactly what flower you will end up with, however this does come with a larger price tag.

There you have it, your options to start growing Dahlias.
